Press Release SPLM-DC U.S. Executive Office
(29/03/2010, SPLM-DC) The SPLM-DC executive office in the U.S has learnt with great disappointment this morning that SPLM-DC's campaign, meetings and local events organized in Wau town has been interrupted by SPLM security forces.
Multiple reports coming from Wau, Southern Sudan saying that SPLM security and uniform organized forces had an attempt and threat to the life of SPLM-DC Chairman Dr. Lam, Secretary Eng: Kisanga and high level delegations that are campaigning together with chairman in Wau town.
The report says that SPLM security had an attempt to disarm body guards belonging to SPLM-DC chairman Dr. Lam Akol and Secretary General Eng: Charles Kisanga. According to the sources, SPLM strategy was to intimidate SPLM-DC members and Supporters by arresting their leader so as to scare followers.
Telephone report from Wau says that SPLM has confiscated SPLM-DC communication equipments, money, and personal items and arrested two journalists, including nine DC members. The sources say the negotiation is on the way to release and to return all items belonging to SPLM-DC.
The SPLM-DC chair Dr. Lam, Secretary General Kisnga and delegations are is in Wau to meet with crowd of DC Members, supporters and citizen of wau to-day at 10:00 AM Sudan local time to deliver message of democratic change.
SPLM DC plan to travel to Yambio, western Equatoria state but they were told by SPLM officials that Yambio Airport is under construction. Our sources on the ground said that the airport was not under construction.
SPLM DC also plan to travel to Rumbek to meet with democratic change members, supporters and Citizen of Rumbek but SPLM officials said that President Kirr is suppose to go to Rumbek so the officials there are giving Kirr the priority over SPLM-DC.
Both SPLM officials in Yambio and Rumbek said that SPLM-DC coming to Yambio or Rumbek is at SPLM-DC risk should something happen to them.
We would like to call upon the international community, the human right watch, the SPLM leadership, most importantly the U.S. Administration to pay close attention to election campaign in Sudan and to ensure free and fair election campaign practices, monitoring voting and election results.
Carter Center and European Union (EU) are closely monitoring the development in wau, mean while some of EU members are also among detain by SPLM security organs in wau.
More information are still coming in, stay tune. SPLM-DC U.S. executive office condemned the SPLM's barbaric and undemocratic behaviour and attitudes towards democratic change leadership, senior officials, members, supporters and general public who would like to listen what democratic change leader is going to say.
We are calling on SPLM head security in wau to immediately provide protection to SPLM-DC chairman, Dr. Lam Akol, his delegations, and release members and supporters of democratic change as soon as possible.
SPLM should not use intimidation, threat, harassment, to disrupt campaign of Democratic Change. We would not allow nor tolerate deprivation of any southern political parties simple because they have different political views and ideology.
How can Sudanese experience fair and free national election and 2011 referendum if SPLM continue attacking diverse southern political parties?
Earlier SPLM resorted to political allegation that SPLM-DC remain in Khartoum and have no plan for south Sudan. Now we can all witness how SPLM have been acting lawlessly against SPLM-DC Chairman and officials of Democratic change in some southern Sudan states. This can tell us that SPLM has failed in many ways and trying to hide from the truth which Southern Sudanese would like to see and hear.
40 delegations travel to Wau with SPLM-DC Chairman Dr. lam and expected to travel to Rumbek, Yambio etc to speak to supporters and citizen of those states why they should vote for democratic change.
We will update you as soon as more details are available.
